MOUNT PLEASANT ó Weather hampered fishing efforts during Thursdayís opening day of the Carolina Billfish Classic with only seven of 26 entries choosing to fish.
The participants, who can fish out of Tolerís Cove or Georgetown Landing, released eight sailfish, and the top three boats all had two sailfish releases. Based on time of release, Blue Sky, owned by Greg Smith and captained by Steve Crammer, is in first place with 400 points. Rascal, owned by Norman Pulliam and captained by Mark Roger, is second while Dem Boys, owned by Tommy Hancock and captained by Reid Bost, is third.
In the non-billfish categories, Rascal has the top dolphin at 21.0 pounds; Christy II has the largest wahoo at 30.7 pounds; and Dem Boys leads the tuna division with a 6.4-pound blackfin.
The tournament continues through Saturday with boats allowed to fish two out of three days, captainís choice.
The S.C. Memorial Reef Auction will be held at 7 p.m. today at Goldbug Island, across from Tolerís Cove, in conjunction with the tournament. Tickets are $25 individual or $40 per couple.
